Chorus: Sing me a song of a lass that is gone Sing as we say goodbye Merry of soul, she sailed on a day Over the sea to Skye Over the sea … to Skye Verse 1: Mull was astern, Rum on the port Eigg on the starboard bow Glory of youth glowed in her soul Where is that glory now? Chorus: Sing me a song of a lass that is gone Sing as we say goodbye Merry of soul, she sailed on a day Over the sea to Skye Verse 2: Give me again all that was there Give me the sun that shone Give me the eyes, give me the soul Give me the lass that's gone Chorus: Sing me a song of a lass that is gone (And we'll all go together) Onward the sailors cry (To pluck wild mountain thyme) Merry of soul, she sailed on a day (All around the blooming heather) Over the sea to Skye (Will ye go lassie go?) Verse 3: Billow and breeze, islands and seas Mountains of rain and sun All that was good, all that was fair All that was she is gone … gone Chorus: Instrumental Chorus: Sing me a song of a lass that is gone Over the sea to Skye Over the sea … to Skye

Let fame, that all hunt after in their lives, Live regist'red upon our brazen tombs And then grace us in the disgrace of death; When, spite of cormorant devouring Time, Th' endeavor of this present breath may buy That honor which shall bate his scythe's keen edge And make us heirs of all eternity. ― Ferdinand, act I, scene1, Love’s Labours Lost With pen and ink, to the London stink I came looking for success A country lad, homespun clad With a world of words to impress All our patrons in the theatre round Spending a day in this big dirty town Ready to be entertained And that’s how I gained my fame I met my love, my titled dove With the best coat of arms, he’d boast His sword at play would quiver and sway And was bigger, he’d claim, than most We’d wile time away on the banks of the Thames Kissing and drinking and reading out poems He was ready to be entertained And that’s how I gained my fame The Virgin Queen and her sinister team Of pox-ridden lords and brave rascals Bade me write bold stories of English glories And many a right royal squabble Came James to the throne, uniting two crowns With a lust for fine tales while out on the town He was wanting to be entertained And that’s how I gained my fame Now I’m back in the country; I’m writing no more When Death comes a-courting, I’ll answer the door He’ll be dying to be entertained Though in truth, he cares not for my fame So, farewell, it’s the end of the game ‘Tis true - all that’s left - is my name

about

This musical collaboration was born in 2018 at the funeral of my mother Margaret Sellers, when John Alderman (her grandson) and I sang "Over the Sea to Skye", a famous Scottish folksong made even more famous by being the Outlander series theme song set to the lyrics of Robert Louis Stevenson. As she was Scottish, this seemed a very suitable choice. I slightly modified the lyrics to fit the occasion, but gave it a different arrangement to suit the fact that it was being sung by two people and accompanied only by a guitar.

The positive reaction to our rendition encouraged us to record our version of the song under the name of "The Leatherheads". Unfortunately, distance and a pandemic delayed this until March of 2022. In the meantime, I had also written a song about William Shakespeare which I felt would suit better The Leatherheads than the albums I have been releasing under my own name. Both songs were consequently recorded at 423 Studios in Merida, Mexico, under the experienced eye of Sergio Aguilar, who also arranged the music and played most of the instruments.

The name "The Leatherheads" comes from a nickname I bestowed on John when he was a boy; the reason why I did is somewhat obscured by a bad memory on my part, but it does have something to do with the town of Leatherhead in Surrey (England), which we were passing at the time.

The song, "Over the Sea to Skye", is dedicated to the memory of Margaret Jenny Sellers née Peterkin (1923 - 2018).
